Résumé

L’amalgame dentaire est un alliage de mercure, d’argent, d’étain, de cuivre en proportions variables utilisé comme matériau d’obturation dans les lésions cavitaires des dents postérieures. Son utilisation en art dentaire est très ancienne.
Une polémique a été soulevée sur la pollution environnementale et sur les risques d’intoxication pour le patient et le praticien liés à l’amalgame.
Notre enquête auprès de 103 chirurgiens dentistes a eu pour objectifs de déterminer la quantité de mercure utilisée dans l’année, de recenser les risques liés à l’équipement et à la manipulation de l’amalgame et d’étudier le devenir des déchets d’amalgame. Nos résultats ont montré que parmi les dentistes :

• 44,66 % utilisent de 250 à 500 g de mercure par année
• 14,56 % insèrent l’amalgame à mains nues
• 10,68 % condensent l’amalgame à mains nues
• 87,38 % jettent les déchets d’amalgame à la poubelle

Abstract

Dental amalgam is a combination of mercury, silver, tin and copper used in the treatment of the dental decays.
Amalgam is used in dentistry since many years. Actually a large discussion held according to environmental pollution and risk of intoxication for the patient and the dentist himself.
The aim of our survey concerning 103 dentists was to determine the quantity of mercury used in a year, to see the risks linked with the equipment and the manipulation of amalgam and to study the incoming of the trashes of amalgam.
Our results showed that among the dentists :

• 44,66 % used 250 to 500 g of mercury by year
• 14,56 % used their hands for insertion of amalgam in the cavities
• 10,68 % used their hands for condensation of amalgam in the cavities
• 87,38 % throw their amalgam on the trash
