Résumé

Le chirurgien-dentiste offre une image de lui qui influence le jugement que ses patients portent à son égard. Ce travail se fixe pour objectifs de :

• relever la sensibilité du patient à l'esthétique du praticien ;
• vérifier si cet esthétique contribue à tisser un rapport de confiance entre patient et praticien ;
• suggérer une ligne de maquillage donnée.

Un questionnaire a été soumis aux praticiens et un autre aux patients âgés de sexe masculin et féminin ainsi qu'à des enfants d'au moins quatre ans. Il ressort que les patients se font une idée du praticien dès le premier abord, et que la propreté et l'élégance sont des caractéristiques très appréciées. Le maquillage doit être discret pour ne pas choquer ou effrayer les patients. L'esthétique au cabinet dentaire est donc un atout et non une quelconque fioriture. Car 95 % des patients sont sensibles à l'aspect extérieur du praticien.

Abstract
Style and appearance in a dentist practice : is it worthwhile or a mere superfluity ?

Appearance and style of the dental practitioner influences the perception of the patients. The objectives of this work are threefold :

• To raise the awareness of the patient regarding style and appearance ;
• Evaluate whether style and appearance contribute to creating a relationship of trust between the patient and the practitioner ;
• Make suggestions on enhancing one's appearance.

A questionnaire was sent out to practitioners, senior patients of both sexes, and to children of four years or older. The evaluation shows that patients make their own judgement in the practitioner as of the first encounter, and cleanli-ness and elegance are highly rated. Make up is to be applied in a discreet fashion so as not to shock or scare the patients. 95 % of the persons surveyed were partial to the external appearance of the dentist. Appearance and style therefore matter, and may not be considered superfluous.
