Résumé

Introduction : Les maladies parodontales constituent une des principales affections en odontologie. Selon la maladie parodontale, il existe plusieurs thérapeutiques pour faire face à des situations cliniques parodontales. L’objectif de cette étude était d’évaluer la place des thérapeutiques qu’offre la parodontie dans l’exercice quotidien des chirurgiens-dentistes du Togo.
Matériels et méthodes : Une étude transversale descriptive a été menée auprès des chirurgiens-dentistes du Togo d’octobre à novembre 2023 après l’approbation de l’ordre national des chirurgiens-dentistes. Un questionnaire auto-administré en ligne (Google forms) a été envoyé aux chirurgiens-dentistes par WhatsApp selon les critères d’inclusion. L’analyse statistique a été réalisée à l’aide du logiciel SPSS version 25.
Résultats : Sur un total de 41 chirurgiens-dentistes inscrit au tableau de l’ordre national, 38 ont répondu à l’enquête dont 63,2% d’hommes. 28,9% avait un âge compris entre 56 et 65 ans et 60,5% des praticiens exerçaient dans le privé. Le détartrage était réalisé par 100% de praticiens et la motivation à l’hygiène bucco-dentaire par 84,2%. La réévaluation était effectuée par 78,9% de praticiens. La frénectomie était l’acte chirurgical le plus réalisé par 79,3% de praticiens suivie de la gingivectomie par 63,2%. La thérapeutique parodontale de soutien était réalisée par 63,2% de praticiens, 89,5% de praticiens ne pratiquaient pas la parodontie par manque de formation et 92,1% avaient jugé leur niveau de connaissance en parodontologie insuffisant.
Conclusion : Le détartrage et la motivation à l’hygiène bucco-dentaire étaient les actes les plus fréquemment pratiqués. La thérapeutique chirurgicale était très peu pratiquée. Il convient d’initier des formations continues à l’endroit des chirurgiens-dentistes du Togo.

Abstract
Periodontics in daily practice: a survey of dentists in Togo

Introduction: Periodontal disease is one of the most important conditions in dentistry. Depending on the type of periodontal disease, there are several therapeutics available to deal with periodontal clinical situations. The aim of this study was to assess the role of periodontal therapies in the daily practice of Togo’s dental surgeons.
Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among Togo’s dental surgeons from October to November 2023, following approval by Togo’s national dental association. An online self-administered questionnaire (Google forms) was sent to dentists by WhatsApp following the inclusion criteria. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25.
Results: Out of a total of 41 dentists, 38 responded to the survey, 63.2% of them were men. 28.9% were aged between 56- and 65-year-old, and 60.5% were in private practice. Scaling was performed by 100% of practitioners, and oral hygiene motivation by 84.2%. Reassessment was performed by 78.9% of practitioners. Frenectomy was the most frequently performed surgical procedure by 79.3% of practitioners, followed by gingivectomy by 63.2%. Supportive periodontal therapy was performed by 63.2% of practitioners, 89.5% of practitioners did not practice periodontics due to lack of training, and 92.1% considered their level of knowledge in periodontology insufficient.
Conclusion: Scaling and oral hygiene motivation were the most widely practiced procedures. Surgical treatment was rarely used. Togo’s dental surgeons therefore need ongoing training.
