Abstract
Background: Poor oral hygiene is common among athletes, and many of them struggle to apply preventive measures, leading to a high prevalence of periodontal disease among sports practitioners affecting negatively their performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate oral hygiene habits and periodontal status of professional combat sport athletes.
Methods: A cross-sectional study including male and female combat sport athletes aged at least 18 years old. A questionnaire related to oral health behavior was given to all participants and a full mouth periodontal examination was performed by a single examiner. Plaque Index, Bleeding on Probing (BOP), Pocket Depth (PD) and the Community of Periodontal Index (CPI) were recorded.
